Supreme Court Says It May Consider Interim Bail To Arvind Kejriwal Due To Lok Sabha Elections

In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Friday (3 May) said it may consider granting interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail in liquor policy case, in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta which heard his petition challenging the arrest in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case noted that the hearing may not be over on the next date too and said that it may in that case consider the question of interim bail.

"It does appear we will not be able to complete today. So keep it on Tuesday morning itself... If it’s going to take time, we may then consider the question of interim bail because of the elections," the Court stated during the proceedings, Indian Express reported.

The Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), highlighted that the elections were a key point in Kejriwal's petition against his arrest.

“Maybe. But that’s for interim bail…We may hear you on that,” the court said.

ASG Raju referred to the interim bail granted to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh and said, “Look at the statements he is making.”

The ASG pointed out that they had not filed any application for interim bail.

The court said, “We are not saying anything. We would like to hear you on the question of interim bail because of the question of elections… We may grant, we may not grant… We must be open to you because neither side should be taken by surprise…”.
