US President Donald Trump again claimed that India is cutting Russian oil imports while announcing fresh sanctions on Moscow’s energy giants, Rosneft and Lukoil, reported The Times Of India.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “China is cutting back very substantially on the purchase of Russian oil, and India is cutting back completely, and we’ve done sanctions.”
The comments came ahead of Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea, where he hopes to reach a “complete deal.”
Trump emphasised that discussions would focus on trade, agriculture, and China’s role in exporting components used to make fentanyl.
“We’re going to be talking about fentanyl. It is killing a lot of people… it comes from China,” he stated, adding, “I want our farmers to be taken care of, and he wants things also.”
Despite Trump’s repeated claims, India has consistently denied any move to reduce Russian oil imports, stressing that its decisions are driven by “protecting national interests.”
Trump has made similar remarks in the past, claiming India would gradually scale down Russian oil imports.
“India, as you know, has told me they are going to stop... It’s a process. You can’t just stop (buying oil from Russia). By the end of the year, they’ll be down to almost nothing,” he said earlier.
