US President Donald Trump is facing renewed scrutiny after reports emerged that his name appears multiple times in Department of Justice documents related to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, published on Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi had briefed Trump in May that his name appeared multiple times in the Epstein files.
The situation grew more complicated when another WSJ report last week alleged that Trump wrote a lewd birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003, a claim Trump has firmly denied, prompting him to file a defamation lawsuit against the publication.
The context in which Trump’s name is mentioned remains unclear.
As with many influential figures in 1990s New York, Trump was publicly associated with Epstein, who was known for forging relationships with celebrities to boost his social standing.
While the new report doesn't present substantially new information about Trump’s ties to Epstein, the White House quickly dismissed the story as fabricated.
A senior White House official told CNN, “The White House is not surprised by this—Trump’s name was present in the binders that Bondi produced and handed out.”
The official also pointed out that materials already made public by the Justice Department had included Trump’s name, and there was no indication of any misconduct on his part.
Communications Director Steven Cheung denounced the report as “fake news,” reiterating that Trump had severed ties with Epstein long ago.
“He kicked him out of his club for being a creep,” Cheung told CNN, adding, “This is nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media, just like the Obama Russiagate scandal, which President Trump was right about.”
