Releasing a statement on the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk in Bangladesh, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed 'deep concern' over multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities.
The statement mentioned that Das is the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote. As per media reports, he is also president of Pundarik Dham in Bangladesh and an ISKCON member.
Das was detained by the Dhaka Police’s Detective Branch on Monday (25 November) at Dhaka airport as he faced sedition charges allegedly for hoisting a saffron flag and leading protests against attacks on Hindus.
"This incident follows the multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh," the MEA said mentioning several documented cases of arson and looting of minorities' homes and business establishments.
"It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings," the statement added.
Concerns over theft and vandalism and desecration of deities and temples were also expressed in the statement while noting the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Das.
The Indian MEA urged Bangladesh authorities under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.
