In a bid to modernise one of Visakhapatnam’s most iconic tourist spots, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has unveiled plans for a brand-new ropeway system at Kailasagiri, alongside an adventure luge gravity ride, according to a Times of India report.

The new ropeway, stretching nearly 1.5 km, will replace the current 375 metre system, which has served tourists for years.

This expansion is part of a Rs 60 crore development project under a public-private partnership model, for which VMRDA has invited proposals from private players.

The upgraded ropeway will use a monocable detachable gondola system or comparable high-capacity technology to improve passenger flow and offer panoramic views of the Vizag coastline, cityscape, and surrounding hills.

With at least 20 gondolas planned, each accommodating 6 to 8 people, the new system is designed to boost accessibility and ease traffic congestion on the hilltop.

The upcoming luge ride will feature a minimum of two 500 metre tracks and 100 luge carts, aimed at offering family-friendly thrills.
