The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has commenced construction on seven critical roads aimed at linking the upcoming Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram with Visakhapatnam city through multiple routes, according to a The Hindu report.
“The foundation stone for all these projects, covering 26.72 km, was laid at Adavivaram Junction on Sunday (28 September), and the work will be completed by June 2026, when the airport is expected to be inaugurated. These roads are being laid at an estimated cost of Rs 175 crore as part of the VMRDA Master Plan,” VMRDA Chairman MV Pranav Gopal was quoted as saying in the report.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Pranav Gopal noted, “Our aim is to complete the roads before the airport operations start at Bhogapuram. We are committed to this goal and will ensure that the work is completed without delay.”
He added that the new roads would ease congestion on the highways and facilitate faster airport access for passengers.
The planned stretches include Chippada–Polipalli (6.32 km), Nerellavalasa–Thallavalasa (4 km), Boyapalem–Kapuluppada (3.1 km), Gambhiram (2.2 km), Gambhiram–Paradeshipalem (1.4 km), Adavivaram–Gandigundam (8 km), and Gambhiram–Sivashakti Nagar (1.7 km).
Nearly 80 per cent of the civil works at the airport have already been completed.
Passenger groups and resident associations have repeatedly urged authorities to prioritise road construction before the airport becomes operational, warning of potential traffic snarls at key city junctions such as Hanumanthawaka, Madhurawada, and Anandapuram.
Meanwhile, VMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner KS Viswanathan inspected the ongoing work of the rail overbridge (ROB) at NAD Flyover Junction on Monday (29 September).
