Uttar Pradesh aims to transform into a largely urban state through its Viksit UP-2047 vision, which promises smart cities, universal access to clean drinking water, pucca houses, modern public transport, and metro services, reported The Times Of India.

The vision document outlines five strategic targets for 2030, which include achieving 35 per cent urbanisation, creating three new regional economic zones, ensuring 100 per cent access to drinking water, sanitation, electricity, and pucca houses, and implementing complete sewage treatment and scientific waste disposal in AMRUT cities.

Over the next 22 years, the state plans to urbanise further so that 60 per cent of its population resides in cities.

Ten cities—including Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Bareilly, and Gorakhpur—are targeted for global competitiveness, with at least three aiming to rank among the world’s 50 most liveable cities.

The government is prioritising modernising sewerage and waste management.

“A robust solid waste management mechanism is being developed to ensure systematic collection, recycling, and safe disposal. These initiatives will not only make cities cleaner and healthier but also guarantee environmental sustainability and safeguard public health,” a government spokesperson was quoted as saying by ToI.

He stated that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's goal for urban development goes beyond infrastructure and focuses on improving people's quality of life.

According to the roadmap, by 2047, Uttar Pradesh would not only be India's most developed state, but also a global model of sustainable development.

In the past eight years, the state created 117 new urban local bodies and expanded 123.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, 17 district headquarters received modern facilities.

The state also plans to integrate Lucknow with five neighbouring districts to form the State Capital Region.

Through schemes like the Aspirational City Scheme and Mukhyamantri Nagar Srijan Yojana, 100 fast-growing cities are being developed, with 2,534 km of roads and 342 km of drains built, with special attention to Purvanchal and Bundelkhand.
