Income Tax department officials are carrying out searches at the premises of contractors and suppliers to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) at over 40 locations in Chennai and other districts.
Some of the areas in which the raids are underway are Thoraipakkam, Neelangarai, Pallikarnai, Navalur, OMR and Ennore.
The raids come days after the ED raided the premises of those in the sand mining business and officials of the Water Resources department.
In April this year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided 10 locations in Chennai related to TANGEDCO officials. In a statement, it said that Rs 360 crore kept in the form of fixed deposits had been seized.
Later, in July, the NGO Arappor Iyyakam stated that there had been a loss of Rs 397 crore to the exchequer because of irregularities in the procurement of distribution transformers for TANGEDCO.
It alleged that minister Senthil Balaji played a role in this during his tenure as Electricity minister.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
