The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong advisory urging Indians not to join the Russian military, after reports emerged that several nationals had been forced into combat roles in Ukraine, the Hindustan Times reported.

“We have seen reports about Indian nationals having been recruited recently into the Russian army. Government has on several occasions over the past one year underlined the risks and dangers inherent in this course of action and cautioned Indian citizens accordingly,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Wednesday (10 September).

The warning follows The Hindu report citing two Indians in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region who claimed they were lured to Russia with promises of construction jobs but were instead deployed to the frontline.

Speaking from Selydove, a town captured by Russia in November 2024, they said at least 13 more Indians were trapped in similar conditions.

According to the report, the two men had travelled to Russia within the past six months on student or visitor visas. They alleged that an agent who promised them work in the construction sector diverted them into the military.

The MEA confirmed it has raised the matter with Russian authorities in Delhi and Moscow. “We are also in touch with the families of the affected Indian citizens,” Jaiswal said, adding that the government has demanded their release.

Reiterating its caution, the ministry stressed that Indian nationals should avoid any such offers. “We once again strongly urge all Indian nationals to stay away from any offers to join the Russian army as this is a course fraught with danger,” the spokesperson said.

The advisory reflects New Delhi’s concern over deceptive recruitment practices, which it said pose serious risks to the lives and security of Indian citizens in conflict-hit areas.
