Two regiments of S-400 are already in service of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The first squadron was delivered in December 2021 and is deployed on the Punjab sector. The second squadron was delivered in the middle of 2022 and is deployed in the Chicken Neck sector of Sikkim against China.
Moscow had earlier assured India of the timely deliveries of the equipment India has contracted for.
The S-400 is one of the world's most advanced air defence systems and can take down targets at a range of over 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.
India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia during the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit held in New Delhi on 5 October 2018 to purchase five regiments of the cutting-edge air defence system despite the threat of US sanctions.
The US, in a relief to India, has given a waiver under the Countering America’s Adversary Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) in July last year.
