Maharashtra Cabinet Clears 32 Km Pune Metro Expansion: Rs 10,000 Crore Project With Two New Lines

In a major boost to Pune’s urban transport, the Maharashtra government on Monday (14 October) approved the construction of two new metro rail routes in the city.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting and will see the development of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nalstop-Dahanukar Colony-Warje-Manikbaug metro lines, according to an official announcement.

The combined length of the two routes will span 31.63 kilometers and include 28 stations. The project will be executed by Maha Metro at an estimated cost of Rs 9,897 crore.

Union Minister and Pune Lok Sabha MP Murlidhar Mohol expressed optimism about the impact of the new metro lines on the city’s transport infrastructure. "The new lines are crucial for the overall development of Pune. With the state government's approval, I will now pursue necessary clearances from the Centre," he said, reports Economic Times.

These additions are expected to significantly enhance public transportation options in Pune, the second-largest city in Maharashtra, and address the growing commuter needs in the expanding metropolitan area.

Presently, the Pune Metro covers a total length of 43 kilometers across various corridors and extensions. Line 1, from PCMC to Swargate, spans 17.4 km with 14 stations, including 5 underground and 9 elevated.

Line 2, from Vanaz to Ramwadi, extends 15.7 km with 16 elevated stations. The Line 1A extension, from PCMC to Nigdi, adds 4.413 km with 4 elevated stations, while the Line 1B extension, from Swargate to Katraj, covers 5.46 km and includes 3 underground stations.

Currently, Pune Metro serves approximately 90,000 passengers daily across Lines 1 and 2.
