A group of Muslims attacked BJP workers and the police for opposing illegal construction works, including a mosque in Bandi Atmakur in Kurnool on Saturday.
The mob pelted stones at the police, who tried to control the situation, and several BJP workers were left injured at the end of the incident. They surrounded the police station and attacked the workers of the saffron party, and the police had to then fire in the air to bring the situation under control.
“The BJP leaders including Srikanth Reddy and others questioned the government over illegal constructions at Bandi Atmakur town,” Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Andhra Pradesh BJP General Secretary, was quoted in a report by OpIndia.
He added, “When they were questioning it, some people attacked the BJP leaders and damaged their vehicles in front of the police. It is shameful and unfortunate.”
There has been a conflict over the construction of the concerned mosque behind the Padmavati School in the town.
Further, Andhra Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP) DG Sawang has assured that stringent action will be taken against those provoking people in the name of religion. DGP Sawang also acknowledged that certain people are trying to instigate clashes in Kurnool.
