Search engine giant Google Inc has rolled out a new feature to allow users to book rail tickets directly through the Google Pay payments app on both iOS and Android devices.
“Users can now buy train tickets directly on Google Pay, at no additional cost. Search, book and cancel train tickets, with ease and convenience, right within the app,” said a company statement.
Booking details like seat availability, journey duration, and travel times between stations of choice will be made available on the Google Pay apps.
“We have already seen hugely encouraging user response for cab and bus ticket booking options on Google Pay with abhiBus, Goibibo, RedBus, Uber and Yatra. Now with IRCTC on Google Pay, your travel is made simpler even on trains,” added the company.
The company claims that millions of Indians are adopting Google Pay “month on month from all over the country, in towns and villages to recharge their mobile plans, pay bills, pay for movies, book cabs, buy bus tickets and more.”
India’s already crowded digital payments market recently received another new entrant: MiPay. Launched by the country’s highest selling smartphone brand Xiaomi, it will take on the likes of Paytm, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Paypal, PhonePe and Mobikwik.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
