Convicted terrorist Jalees Ansari whose name has featured in at least 50 bombings, was arrested today (17 January) by Uttar Pradesh police in Kanpur while he was leaving a city mosque.
Ansari was said to have been on route to a railway station and may have planned to enter Nepal but was nabbed by the special task force of the UP police.
“Jalees Ansari has been arrested when he was coming out from a mosque. He has been brought to Lucknow. It is a big achievement of the UP Police”, UP DGP O P Singh was quoted as saying.
Ansari had gone missing in Mumbai yesterday (16 January) after he told his family he was going to offer Namaz.
Ansari has been convicted in the Jaipur serial blasts, Ajmer blasts and Malegaon blast case and had undergone training in Pakistan back in the 1990s. A doctor by profession he is said to have been radicalised by terrorist Abdul Karim Tunda while he was working for the BMC.
Ansari became an expert in TNT and bombs. He was released on parole following a supreme court order on 28 December. He had in the past led modules within SIMI and Indian Mujahideen.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
