The Indian capital, New Delhi, has been ranked sixth globally in the 300 best performing and fastest growing metropolitan cities by the Brookings’ study Global Metro Monitor 2018, Financial Express has reported.
Per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Delhi has risen by 6.6 per cent from the year 2014-16. The report also says that Delhi has generated 6.21 lakh jobs for people which represents a growth of 4.7 per cent.
Several other metropolitan cities of India also feature in the list including Hyderabad which ranked fourteenth while Mumbai ranked on twenty-third place. Surat is at the nineteenth place on the list.
According to the report, Hyderabad has generated 3.43 lakh jobs for people representing 5.4 per cent growth between 2014-16. Hyderabad’s GDP grew by 8.7 per cent in this period.
“Emerging economies accounted for 80 per cent of the 60 best-performing metropolitan areas. Large metro areas in China and Emerging Asia-Pacific overwhelmingly dominate the upper ranks. Not all emerging market metro areas performed well, however. The bottom quintile of metro areas—those that exhibited slower growth—included many Latin American metro areas, especially Brazil’s big cities,” report said.
With a GDP growth of 21.2 per cent in the given period, Dublin, the capital city of Ireland is leading the chart. In the Asia-Pacific region, Chinese cities are topping the list securing 17 places in the top 30 metro areas.
