In a sign of growing threat to civil society and fundamental rights from religious fanatics, a 26-year-old Bajrang Dal activist Harsha was stabbed to death in Karnataka’s Shivamogga.
As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in the city limits will remain shut for two days.
“A group of four-five youth murdered him. I don't know of any organization being behind this murder. Law and order is under control in Shivamogga. As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in city limits have been closed for two days,” Home minister Araga Jnanendra said, reports Hindustan Times.
The brutal murder in the wake of controversy behind allowing hijab inside government educational institutes has increased tensions in the city.
According to Live Adalat, 26-year-old social activist Harsha was actively campaigning for secular uniforms in educational institutes and was murdered for a Facebook post against Hijab in schools.
The state’s rural development minister KS Eshwarappa said that the youth was murdered by ‘Muslim goondas.’

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
