A granite stone plaque installed in remembrance of 26/11 martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan at Yelahanka, Bengaluru was found destroyed on Saturday (15 September).
Tensions prevailed after the locals found out that miscreants might be behind the damage, until the police arrived at the spot to clarify that it was due to an accident caused by rash driving.
A traffic police inspector from Yelahanka New Town was reported by Deccan Chronicle saying, “A mini-truck from Mother Dairy went out of control and crashed into the structure on Saturday evening. The granite stone slab carrying Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s name broke into pieces. BBMP workers detained the driver and later traced the owner of the truck.”

BBMP Joint Commissioner soon arrived at the spot and inspected the damage caused. Soon, the traffic police were alerted about the incident.
The owner of the truck that met with an accident has taken interest to rebuild the structure and most of the work has been given.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara soon tweeted to the Mayor of Bengaluru, alerting him about the incident.
The Mayor said, “Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who put up a brave fight against the terrorists of 26/11 Mumbai attack, was the pride of Bengaluru. It is sad that the plaque named after him was damaged. The BBMP joint commissioner has already inspected the spot. We have directed the engineers to prepare an estimate to repair the damage.”
Major Sandeep was martyred during the 26/11 anti-terror operations in Mumbai. He was a commando in the elite Special Action Group of the National Security Guards. Government of India awarded him the Ashoka Chakra, highest peace time gallantry award in 2009.
