The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has crashed down on cable operators and Direct-to-Home (DTH) providers after hundreds of customers posted grievances saying the platforms are not allowing them to shift their base packs and instead are asking them to add the channels on their existing packages, the Telecom Talk reports
Following the complaints, the regulatory body in India will not allow the DTH providers from adding extra channels to the subscribers base pack, except the 25 Doordarshan channels. Further, the TRAI has also told service providers to set up call centres to resolve the complaints consumers are facing.
“The Authority has been informed that some service providers are pushing certain packages, not allowing choice within first 100 channels, providing certain FTA channels irrespective of consumer’s options etc,” the TRAI said. “The Authority would be taking note of such cases and will direct the Distribution Platform Operator (DPO's) to follow the regulations and empower the choice of the consumer, ensuring they pay for what they wish to watch,” the TRAI added.
The body has also assigned an email ID and phone number for consumers to report erratic behaviour from DTH operators. In a statement, the TRAI said, “In case any DTH / Cable Operator is insisting on predefined pack or bouquets without providing real choices, subscribers may report the same at Trai call centre 0120 – 6898689 or e-mail at das@trai.gov.in.”
