Pune Metro: PMC Approves Rs 4,020 Crore Nigdi-Swargate Underground Line Extension, To Be Ready By June 2026An underground section of Pune Metro under construction (Maha Metro)

The general body of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday (22 September) approved the 5.4 km long extension of Pune Metro from Nigdi to Swargate.

The proposed extension will be completely underground with three stations: Gultekdi Market, Padmavati Chowk, and Katraj Junction.

The project, which requires a total expenditure of Rs 4,020 crore, may start by June 2026, reports The Indian Express.

Reportedly, the tenders are expected to be issued in April-May 2022, and actual work is expected to commence in July-August 2022.

“We won’t face much trouble when it comes to land acquisition. There’s about 6,000 square metres of private land which we will be required to acquire from private entities. Rest of the land (17,188 square metres) is owned by PMC or state government agencies,” Maha-Metro official Atul Gadgil said.

Pune Metro project has been undertaken by MAHA Metro, an SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) of the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra.

In February, the Maharashtra government approved an extension to the 31 km Pune Metro rail network corridor by adding the metro route from PCMC to Nigdi on the Pimpri Chinchwad – Swargate Line.

A depot, parking bays, multimodal transport integration, and pedestrian bridge are part of the earlier approved extension project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,050 crore.
