The Supreme Court of India has restored its November 2016 order, banning fireworks till 1 November of this year. The ban will remain in force during the festivities of Deepavali – which falls on 18 and 19 of October this year.

Earlier in September this year, the apex court had temporarily lifted the ban. However a petition was filed to restore the ban which the bench comprising of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan heard on 6 October.

The court had also set up a committee to study the impact of the firecrackers on the health of city residents during the upcoming festivals and directed the police to slash by half the number of temporary licences this year compared to last year and cap it at 500.

The court also said that the sale of crackers will resume from 16 November, but with ‘conditions’.
