God’s own country leads the pack of south Indian states that top the list of ‘well governed’ states in the country, reports the Times of India.

The Public Affairs Index 2018, released by the think tank Public Affairs Centre (PAC) in Bengaluru shows Kerala topping the list for the third consecutive year as the best governed state in the country followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka. While Gujarat fared a close fifth, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar have been ranked the lowest among the big states.

Chairman of PAC and former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) K Kasturirangan stressed on the need for a young country like India to ‘assess and address its developmental challenges. “The PAI 2018 is one example of a data-based framework that provides some basis, even if rudimentary, to assess the performance of states in India” he said , as quoted by the daily.

Among smaller states - those whose population is less than two crore - Himachal Pradesh is on the top while north eastern states of Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya are at the bottom of the index.

In its third year, this index studies governance in the states through a data-based framework assessing the social and economic development that they provide to their people.
