UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that she will be resigning as leader of the Conservative party on 7 June, and thus be stepping down as the country’s prime minister once her successor is decided, reports BBC.
"I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold,” the prime minister announced.
In her statement, May spoke about her “deep regret” in having been unsuccessful in implementing Brexit.
May’s leadership was marred by several failed attempts to pass a Brexit withdrawal deal though the British House of Commons. The prime minister had to face intense criticism over her failure to achieve Brexit during her term.
There is doubtless going to be a heated contest to replace May as leader of the Conservatives, and by extension as the prime minister of the UK. Some of the Tories in the race might be Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
