Pakistan has proposed US President Donald Trump’s name for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting his "decisive diplomatic intervention" during the latest India-Pakistan conflict in a post on X, The Hindu reported.
The move comes even as Indian officials continue to refute Trump’s claim about mediating during the India-Pakistan standoff, maintaining no third party was involved.
Earlier this week, Trump hosted Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir at the White House.
According to White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, Munir got the invite to attend lunch with the US President after he credited Trump for helping prevent a possible nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan during their brief military standoff in May.
However, India has repeatedly said that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.
In a statement, Pakistan hailed Trump’s “strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship” for de-escalating a volatile India-Pakistan standoff, which it claimed prevented a potential nuclear crisis.
The statement called his intervention proof of his role as a “genuine peacemaker” committed to resolving disputes through diplomacy.
It also noted Trump’s “offers” to resolve the Kashmir issue.
However, Prime Minister Modi had rejected any third-party mediation on Kashmir issue during a call with Trump earlier this week during G7 Summit.
PM Modi also rejected Trump's invite to visit Washington after G7 summit, citing prior commitments.
Meanwhile, Trump on Friday himself weighed in on the Nobel Prize issue saying he deserves the Nobel for multiple reasons—his alleged role in defusing India-Pakistan tensions and a peace deal between Congo and Rwanda among them.
"I should have gotten it four or five times," the US President said.
"They won't give me a Nobel Peace Prize because they only give it to liberals," he added.
