Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has clarified RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's recent statement on the delay in selecting the BJP national president.

Bhagwat had remarked that electing a BJP chief wouldn’t have taken this (much) time if the decision was made by the Sangh, reported India Today.

Responding to the remarks at an India Today event, Fadnavis said the comments highlighted that the BJP independently decides its leadership.

"BJP has its own process of electing a chief. RSS chief's answer signalled that we don't take these decisions, they are taken by the party," he said.

Fadnavis assured that the party would conduct the election at the appropriate time.

"The election for the BJP president will happen at the right time. There are no problems," he added.

He emphasised that the party would make “the right decision at the right time” and noted, "I am not competent enough to answer this as I am not part of the committee which takes decisions on the BJP presidential election."

The BJP has yet to finalise a candidate for its next national president, leading to speculation that the RSS might influence the choice.

Critics suggest the lack of consensus has contributed to the delay.

Earlier, Bhagwat had distinguished the roles of the Sangh and the party: "I have been running a shakha for 50 years now, so if someone gives me advice about that, I am the expert there. When it comes to running the state, they have been doing it for long, so they are the expert."

He added, "Suggestions can be given, but the decision in their field is theirs, and ours in our field."

He concluded, "If we were deciding, would it have taken so long?"
