Chennai's Second Airport Project Advances With Acquisition Of First Batch Of Land Parcels

The Tamil Nadu government has completed the initial phase of land acquisition for the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, with 17.52 acres transferred to the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) on Wednesday (9 July).

According to The New Indian Express report, the acquisition involved 19 landowners from five villages, comprising eight local and 11 non-local landholders.

The state disbursed a total compensation of Rs 9.22 crore, credited directly into the landowners’ bank accounts following negotiations chaired by the Kancheepuram District Collector.

This milestone follows the government’s recent notification detailing compensation rates for the project, which is intended to serve as Chennai’s second airport.

The compensation structure ranges between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 2.58 crore per acre, determined by the Guideline Land Value (GLV), market rates, and private negotiations.

The entire airport project envisages acquiring 3,774.1 acres of patta land and 1,972.17 acres of government land.

However, the present compensation package accounts for only 3,331.25 acres, leaving the status of the remaining parcels uncertain.

Despite the progress, strong opposition persists among residents from 13 villages, particularly Ekanapuram, who fear displacement and loss of livelihoods.

In addition to monetary compensation, the government has offered affected families options of employment, a one-time payment of Rs 7.5 lakh, or an annuity of Rs 3,000 per month for two decades, alongside compensation for structures.
