Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to conduct a survey and identify suitable sites for constructing ropeways or cableways across the Yamuna River.
The DDA has been tasked with submitting a preliminary report within a month, according to a statement from Raj Niwas.
The proposed project envisions eco-friendly cable cars with a capacity of approximately 50 passengers each, operating from morning to night.
These installations will be strategically placed near metro stations on both sides of the Yamuna to enhance accessibility while ensuring the preservation of the floodplain environment by avoiding encroachment or concretisation.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasised the multiple benefits of the initiative, highlighting its potential to reduce dependency on pollution-causing vehicles such as buses, autos, and private cars.
By alleviating road congestion and promoting cleaner air, the ropeways aim to contribute significantly to Delhi’s environmental goals.
In addition to encouraging the use of public transport, the project is designed to foster physical activity amidst daily schedules.
The ropeways are expected to shorten travel distances between residential and commercial areas, saving time and further reducing traffic congestion.
In green spaces like Baansera and Asita, developed by the DDA along the Yamuna, parking facilities have been deliberately kept at a distance to encourage walking and fitness, aligning with the project’s sustainable and health-conscious ethos.
