DGCA Grants Aerodrome License To Navi Mumbai International Airport, Paving Way For October Launch

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted an aerodrome license to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

In a statement on Tuesday (30 September), the operator Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL) said, “Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marks a significant milestone with the grant of its Aerodrome Licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The licence, awarded after meeting stringent safety and regulatory requirements, is an essential prerequisite for commencing operations.”

Being developed jointly by the Adani Group and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO), NMIA is designed as a five-phase project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the airport in early October.

Last week, Air India Express announced that it would operate 20 daily departures, amounting to 40 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), linking the new hub with 15 cities across India.

The Air India Group plans to expand its footprint further, scaling up to 55 daily departures (110 ATMs) by mid-2026, which will also include up to five international services each day.

Both IndiGo and Akasa Air have already committed to commencing operations from NMIA.

In its launch stage, it will be able to handle 20 million passengers annually (MPPA) along with 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo.

Once fully complete, the facility is projected to accommodate as many as 90 MPPA and manage 3.2 MMT of cargo every year.
