DRDO Bolsters Defence Self-Reliance With Over 2,000 Technology Transfer Pacts And 200 Production Licences

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major milestone by signing more than 2,000 licensing agreements for technology transfers in 2024, PTI reported.

Speaking at the CII Manufacturing Conclave East in Kolkata on Wednesday (9 July), Chandrika Kaushik, Director General (PC&SI) at DRDO, said, “Over 2,000 agreements were signed for technology transfer licences,” underlining the growing collaboration between DRDO and India’s private sector.

In addition, over 200 production licences have been issued this year, reflecting the rapid pace at which indigenous manufacturing capabilities are being developed.

Over the past five years, more than 130 industries have been identified as development partners or production agencies, significantly strengthening India’s domestic defence ecosystem.

A crucial driver of this progress has been the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme.

Under this initiative, private sector firms are encouraged to develop core defence technologies, backed by financial assistance of up to Rs 50 crore per project from DRDO, along with technical support.

Kaushik emphasised that DRDO scientists are working closely with these private companies, providing guidance and mentorship to ensure successful outcomes and high-quality production standards.

The conclave also saw leading industry figures share insights into India’s manufacturing landscape.

Discussions also touched on CII’s Market Facilitation Services (MFS), designed to help Indian industries expand their global footprint, further aligning with the country’s ambition to become a significant player in international manufacturing and defence markets.
