The government has initiated the impeachment process against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma, days after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation.
On Wednesday (23 July), Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh in Parliament to push forward the proceedings, reported The New Indian Express.
Committee Likely to Probe Corruption Charges
Birla and Harivansh first discussed the matter, after which Shah met them.
The Speaker is now expected to form a statutory committee to investigate allegations of corruption against Justice Varma.
As per the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, the committee will include a senior Supreme Court judge, a sitting Chief Justice of a High Court, and a noted jurist. The panel must submit its report within three months.
If found guilty, the panel’s findings will be presented in both Houses, followed by discussions and voting on the judge’s removal.
Dhankhar’s Role and Resignation
The meeting of the presiding officers assumes significance as the impeachment process of Justice Varma reportedly led to the resignation of Dhankhar.
Dhankhar’s resignation was triggered by his acceptance of an Opposition-backed impeachment notice in the Rajya Sabha, which reportedly clashed with the government's strategy.
