The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will begin energising the 5.6-km overhead equipment (OHE) network on a 5.6km stretch of Metro Line 2, between Mandale and Diamond Garden, from 8 April, Times of India reported.
This marks the first phase of the 23.6-km elevated corridor, which is now being rolled out in parts after facing multiple delays.
MMRDA officials said energising of the Mandale depot’s test track is already done, and the first trainset has been rolled out.
"This step is crucial to initiate trial runs and commissioning activities. We aim to operationalise the Mandale-Diamond Garden stretch before the end of this year," an MMRDA official was quoted as saying by ToI.
Metro Line 2B will link D N Nagar in the west to Mandale in the east, passing through Bandra, Kurla and Chembur.
Once fully operational, it is expected to serve over 10 lakh daily riders and help reduce road traffic.
The Mandale–Diamond Garden segment has been prioritised as part of MMRDA’s phased rollout strategy.
The line will run on a 25kV AC overhead system, consistent with the city's other Metro corridors.
The Mandale depot is a key component for Line 2B of the Mumbai Metro.
The depot is being built on a 31.4-hectare plot of land, which is primarily government-owned, in Mandale, Mankhurd.
Designed as a double-decker structure, the depot will be able to accommodate up to 72 Metro trains.
