In a significant reversal of luck for the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has breached the majority mark required to form government in Odisha according to the early trends for the Odisha Assembly Elections 2024.

The Odisha assembly has 147 seats of which BJP is currently leading in 83 seats, the BJD in 45 seats and the Congress in 12 seats.

The Naveen Patnaik-led regime is facing an anti-incumbency factor after a 25-year long ruling tenure, which may have contributed to the gains for the challenging BJP.

In 2019, the BJD had secured a resounding 112 seats in the state legislative assembly, marking the fifth consecutive term for Naveen Patnaik as the state's Chief Minister since 2000.

The results are still coming in, with many seats expected to face tough competition between the BJP and the BJD.
