Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday (11 September) cleared the Mahanadi Riverfront Development project, a Rs 240-crore initiative to transform stretches of the river into environmental, cultural and spiritual tourism hubs, The New Indian Express reported.
The project will run from 2025 to 2027 and be funded by the state Water Resources department. The plan is divided into two phases. The first, costing Rs 160 crore, will redevelop the riverfront from Mandalia to Chaurpur in Sambalpur.
It will feature parking areas, jogging tracks, selfie points, landscaped parks, open gyms, improved ghats, bathing and aarti ghats, theme plazas, shopping complexes and public toilets.
Phase two, with an outlay of Rs 80 crore, will cover the banks of the Kuakhai and Kushabhadra rivers near Pandara in Bhubaneswar.
Proposals include ring roads, floating jetties, lock gates, bridges, cafeterias, parking zones, toilets, pedestrian walkways, and strengthened embankments.
Calling the Mahanadi the lifeline of the state, Majhi said the project aims to provide social and cultural amenities along riverbanks while creating infrastructure for water sports, recreational and science parks, and herbal gardens through public-private partnerships.
He noted the new tourism sites are expected to spur economic growth.
Other goals include protecting riverbanks from erosion, improving water quality by diverting sewage and managing solid waste, conserving drinking water during shortages, and promoting sustainable use of river resources.
