  • The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the alleged murder of Kanpur-based real estate businessman Manish Gupta. Gupta had died in Gorakhpur under suspicious circumstances on the night of 27 September after he was allegedly beaten up by the police.

As per Union Home Ministry, on the request of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a recommendation has been sent to the CBI to take up the investigation of Manish Gupta's death.

The Yogi government, on Friday (1 October), issued a letter saying that the SIT will proceed with the investigation until the CBI takes over the matter.

Deceased’s wife to get job and financial assistance

The Chief Minister has also instructed for the appointment of Manish Gupta's wife as an officer on special duty(OSD) in the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA). Along with this, CM Yogi directed the authorities to provide financial assistance of Rs 40 lakh to the family of the deceased.

Following CM Adityanath’s recommendations, the deceased’s wife Meenakshi Gupta said that “Chief Minister Yogi has taken a swift decision like an elder brother”.

Meenakshi had earlier appealed to the chief minister to initiate a CBI probe into the matter so that her husband can get justice as soon as possible.

“The attitude of the Gorakhpur police and local administration is questionable, so I can't trust them", said Meenakshi.

Post-mortem report viral on social media, raising more doubts

Since Thursday (28 September), an alleged post-mortem report of Manish Gupta is being widely circulated on social media.

According to this report, Manish has deep injury marks right in the middle of his head. Apart from this, injury marks have also been found on the right arm, on, above, and below the elbow. Not only this, there are marks of injury on the pupil of the left eye as well. There is also an injury to the inner part of the stomach.

As per experts, the injury marks on the head and the iris of the eye cannot be caused by a fall alone.

    What happened that day?

Gupta died under suspicious circumstances after being allegedly assaulted by the police at a hotel in Gorakhpur during a raid on Monday (27 September) night.

His friends, who were with him then, told that a police team from Ramgarhtal police station entered their room late that night and started checking their IDs. When Manish raised questions on the late night investigation, it infuriated the policemen, who then started beating the three friends badly, especially Manish, who later succumbed to the fatal injuries.

In this case, Ramgarhtal police station Inspector Jagat Narayan Singh, Phalmandi police post in-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Akshay Mishra and SI Vijay Yadav, including six policemen have been suspended. An FIR has also been registered against all accused policemen.
