Chhattisgarh police has arrested Suresh Chandrakar, the key accused in the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Hyderabad on Sunday (5 January) night.

The contractor, who had been absconding since the discovery of the journalist's body on 3 January, was taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation, a police official said on Monday.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a 33-year-old freelance journalist, went missing on 1 January.

His body was found two days later in a septic tank on a property owned by Suresh Chandrakar at Chattanpara Basti in Bijapur town.

The SIT was constituted to probe the case, which has garnered significant public and media attention.

The police have already arrested Suresh Chandrakar’s brothers, Ritesh and Dinesh Chandrakar, and his supervisor, Mahendra Ramteke, in connection with the case.

The murder is suspected to be linked to a news report by Mukesh, which exposed alleged corruption in a road construction project in Bijapur, prompting an investigation into local contractors. Police suspect his murder is linked to this exposé.

The Press Council of India has sought a detailed report from the Chhattisgarh government regarding the murder.
