Amritpal Singh Mehron, leader of a radical outfit and the prime suspect in the murder of a popular Punjabi social media influencer Kanchan Tiwari popularly known as Kamal Kaur ‘Bhabhi’, has reportedly fled to the United Arab Emirates within hours of the killing, Bathinda Police confirmed in a press conference.
Mehron heads a fringe outfit called Qaum De Rakhe, which claims to uphold Punjabi cultural values and opposes what it sees as vulgarity in popular media.
Mehron has a well-documented history of online vigilantism. Over the past few years, he has targeted influencers, musicians, and artists for content he deemed “obscene” or “morally corrupt”.
According to Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal, Kamal Kaur’s body was discovered late on 11 June in a car parked near Adesh Medical University. Investigations revealed she had been murdered around 2 am on 10 June.
A look-out circular was issued against Mehron, a resident of Mehron village in Moga district, on 15 June, four days after the crime. Mehron, was allegedly accompanied by one Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh during the incident.
The three reportedly lured Kamal to Bathinda under the guise of promoting vehicles and facilitating repairs to her car.
"Later, both her mobiles were snatched by Mehron and the passwords were forcibly obtained after she was slapped by his accomplices,” the SSP said. She was then strangled.
After the murder, the vehicle was parked near Adesh University on Mehron’s instructions. Jaspreet initially left behind the cloth used in the strangulation but retrieved it later on Mehron’s orders.
The two men were left with the body while Mehron reportedly fled in another vehicle and boarded a 9:15 am flight from Amritsar to the UAE.
Police say two more individuals had prior knowledge of the crime. One of them, Ranjit Singh from Tarn Taran, has been named, while the second remains unidentified.
Mehron has a criminal past, facing charges for threats against a music producer in 2021 and vandalising statues near the Golden Temple in 2020.
Investigations into claims of sexual exploitation are ongoing, with the viscera report awaited. Authorities are preparing a request for his extradition.
Meanwhile, on Monday (16 June), Giani Malkit Singh, the head granthi of the Akal Takht Sahib, sparked controversy by stating that the recent murder of Kamal Kaur was "appropriate" due to her alleged promotion of obscenity.
“We should not listen to vulgar songs... This kind of treatment should be meted out to those who indulge in spreading vulgarity and defaming Sikh community. Nothing wrong has happened. This has happened earlier as well,” he told reporters according to Hindustan Times.
