The Congress party’s women-centric outreach in Bihar has sparked controversy after images of Rahul Gandhi appeared on sanitary pad boxes distributed under the Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, a campaign aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness, India Today reported.
Over 5 lakh women will receive these sanitary pad boxes ahead of the upcoming state Assembly elections.
Inspired by the film Padman, the Congress initiative combines health awareness with a political pitch, featuring Rahul Gandhi’s photo alongside a poll promise of Rs 2,500 monthly aid to women from deprived families.
The BJP has strongly objected to Rahul Gandhi's picture on the packets of sanitary pad, claiming it "insults" women of Bihar.
“An insult of women of Bihar with Rahul Gandhi's picture on sanitary pad! Congress is an Anti-Women party! Women of Bihar will teach the Congress and RJD a lesson,” BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The controversy underscores the fierce competition among political parties to appeal to women voters, who are expected to have a decisive influence in the upcoming polls.
The opposition’s Mahagathbandhan has promised the Mai Behan Maan Yojana, which offers Rs 2,500 monthly direct benefit transfers to women if elected to power.
Meanwhile, the incumbent Nitish Kumar-led government has launched Mahila Samvad, a door-to-door outreach campaign targeting two crore women across villages.
