Sambhal: Three Die Of Bullet Injuries As Police Deny Firearm Use, Opposition Leaders Criticise Survey Of Jama Masjid

Three individuals lost their lives, and at least 20 police officers sustained injuries during clashes in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday (24 November). Violence erupted near the Shahi Jama Masjid in Kot West as a court-ordered survey team arrived to inspect the mosque, officials said.

According to Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, the deceased were identified as Naeem from Kot Kurvi, Bilal from Sarai Tareen, and Numan from Hayat Nagar. "They died due to bullet injuries sustained during the clashes," Singh stated.

The bodies were returned to the families after autopsies. He confirmed that the police personnel injured during the violence, including the SP’s public relations officer, were treated at a local hospital. Authorities have detained 15 individuals, including two women, as investigations continue.

The violence began when groups clashed near the mosque, with reports of stone pelting, arson, and gunfire. Singh mentioned that three groups exchanged fire during the unrest, but emphasised that police did not fire directly at civilians.

"Some police personnel also suffered injuries from bullet fragments," he said, refuting allegations that Naeem was killed by police gunfire. Sambhal SP Krishna Kumar Bishnoi explained, "Police used pellet guns, not firearms. The autopsy reports confirmed gunshot wounds from a .315 bore weapon."

The clashes followed a second court-mandated survey at the mosque, linked to claims that a temple previously stood at the site before being demolished in the 16th century. The first survey was completed on 19 November.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed, internet services suspended, and schools closed in the area to maintain order. The incident drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged a "well-planned conspiracy," while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav called for the Supreme Court to investigate, accusing the state government of orchestrating violence to distract from electoral issues.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak assured a thorough probe, stating, "No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands," Indian Express reported.

Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya added that security measures were in place to prevent further escalation and that social media misuse would be met with legal action.

Despite calls for calm, the area remains tense. Local leaders have appealed for peace, asserting that those involved in the violence were not from the immediate neighborhood. As the situation develops, officials remain focused on restoring stability and ensuring justice.
