Construction of a 13.4 km long elevated road along Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway (EEH), stretching from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Mulund East, has officially commenced.
According to a report by The Free Press Journal, this project undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is valued at Rs 3,314.40 crore and is designed to feature three lanes in each direction, aiming to significantly decongest one of the city’s busiest arterial roads.
Initial groundwork is underway with geotechnical investigations and median barricading in progress. The process involves boring into the ground to study subsurface strata.
The elevated corridor is expected to ease bottlenecks on the EEH, particularly between Kanjurmarg East and the Mulund octroi naka.
However, during construction, motorists are likely to experience increased congestion during peak hours. Authorities are advising commuters to anticipate delays and follow alternative routes where possible, with regular traffic advisories planned.
Entry and exit ramps have been strategically planned at Chheda Nagar, Kanjurmarg, Airoli Bridge, and Mulund octroi naka to enhance connectivity. Once completed, the corridor is expected to streamline travel across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, cutting down commuting time substantially.
The MMRDA awarded the project contract in late 2024, with a projected completion date of December 2028. The contractor will also be responsible for a two year post-construction maintenance period to address any defects.
