India beat Japan by 5-1 in the men's hockey final to win a gold medal in the Asian Games on Friday (6 October). The Indian team also qualified for the Paris Olympics with this victory.
This win takes India's medal tally to a total of 95 with 22 golds. Also, India is assured of winning more than 100 medals as three medals in archery, one in cricket and two in Kabaddi are confirmed.
This will be a record for the Indian contingent as its highest tally was in the last Asian Games with 69 medals.
Harmanpreet Singh scored two goals, while Abhishek, Amit Rohidas and Manpreet Singh scored one goal each. Japan's lone goal came through a penalty corner.
With this feat, India maintained its record of never losing a game to Japan in the Asian Games. During the same tournament, India had earlier beat Japan by 4-2 in a pool match.
