Doctor Vandana Das, who died after being stabbed multiple times at the Kottarakkara taluk hospital in Kollam district, was cremated this afternoon in her hometown Muttuchira in Kottayam district.

She was stabbed by Sandeep, a school teacher who was detained by the police after getting into a brawl with his neighbours. He was brought to the hospital as he was injured in the brawl. He is also said to be undergoing de-addiction treatment.

Her mortal remains were earlier taken to the Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, where people paid their respects.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar, and ministers VN Vasavan and Roshy Augustine were amongst those present at the funeral.

The incident sparked statewide protests demanding security for healthcare personnel. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for a high-level meeting to discuss the issue.

Earlier today (11 May), the Kerala High Court directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to provide security to all hospitals and evolve a protocol regarding how to present people in police custody, while they are taken for treatment.

The assailant Sandeep has been housed in a high-security solitary cell at the Poojappura Central jail.
