For the seventh time in a row, Madhya Pradesh's financial capital, Indore has been declared as the cleanest city of India. Interestingly, Gujarat's Surat emerged as the joint winner for the first time.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards - 2023 were announced by President Droupadi Murmu at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi on Thursday (11 January). It is a survey conducted by the Union government under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Coming to the states, Maharashtra was declared the cleanest, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai is the third cleanest city, Times of India reported.

In cities with less than 1 lakh population, Maharshtra's Saswat was ranked at one, followed by Chhattisgarh's Patan and again, Maharashtra's Lonavala. Varanasi was recognised as the best Ganga town.

Notably, in the previous year, while Indore was announced as the cleanest city, Surat and Navi Mumbai took the next two spots. This means there is not much change in the top three cities in the survey.

Also, Vishakhapatnam retained its fourth position, while Bhopal and Vijaywada exchanged their positions with the former being ranked fifth and the latter sixth this time.

It is pertinent to mention that Indore was also recently named as the best Smart City in the latest edition of the Smart Cities Mission Awards.

Over the years, Swachh Survekshan has emerged as an effective tool for transforming the urban landscape. This year’s Survekshan in 4,477 cities also saw unprecedented citizen feedback — over 12 crore entries compared to nine crore last year.
