Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde laid the foundation stone for the Metro Line-12 on 3 March 2024, marking another step forward in the series of ongoing developments to build Mumbai’s 14 corridor metro network.

Spanning 22 km, the line is set to link Kalyan-Dombivali-Taloja in Navi Mumbai, with the aim of opening a new wave of development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Line 12 will have an elevated structure comprising 19 stations along its route, with an estimated cost of Rs 5,865 crore, according to an official release.

Earlier, on 11 December 2023, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued tenders for the construction of this corridor, following the cancellation of the initial tender months prior.

The MMRDA had cancelled the first tender as the previous alignment did not connect with the Navi Mumbai Metro Line-1.

This upcoming metro line is an extension of Metro Line-5. Line-5, spanning 24.9 km will link Thane to Kalyan through Bhiwandi and comprise a 15-station elevated corridor. Presently under construction, it is anticipated to commence commercial operations by 2025.

Once completed, Line-12 will directly connect the cities of Kalyan-Dombivali with Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is the funding agency for the project, which is expected to be completed by October 2025.

According to a statement by MMRDA, “Considering the growing population of Kalyan-Dombivali and surrounding development, the development plan of 27 villages, the Kalyan Development Centre and the area of NAINA and the urgency of connecting Kalyan-Dombivali with Navi Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MRPDA) Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) metro line is proposed to be extended from Kalyan to Taloja (via Dombivli).”
