Pakistani politician Khurram Nawaz Gandapur made a faux pas on the internet on Saturday (6 July) after purportedly mistaking a clip from popular video game GTA V as real life.
Gandapur, who is the secretary general of Pakistan Awami Tehreek and a member of Pakistan’s Defence committee tweeted out a video praising a pilot’s presence of mind to abort landing at the right time to avoid an oil tanker which was positioned on the runway just as the flight was about to land.

In the video the A380’s landing gear having a close shave with the tanker before flying off. This was described as a “miraculous save by the pilot's presence of mind” by Gandapur who affirmed that the whole incident could easily have turned into a disaster.
While the video is dramatic, nothing of this sort happened in the real world and the clip was actually a simulation carried out by a gamer on GTA 5. Here is the full clip.
One can view the snipped shared by Gandapur from 1.32 onward.
Incidentally, it isn’t the only comic act by Pakistani politicians in recent days. A few days ago it was reported that Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had live-streamed a press conference while enabling the cat filter on its leaders’ faces.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
