Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that Balveer Singh, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district, has been suspended, pending enquiry into accusations that he had broken the teeth of suspects using stones and took them out using cutting pliers.
He made the announcement in response to a calling attention motion brought in the Assembly today (29 March).
Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 2020 batch had earlier been placed in the vacancy reserve of the state police.
The matter came to light after few of the victims narrated their ordeal in a video that was uploaded on social media.
District Collector KP Karthikeyan has ordered an enquiry into the incident.
The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo moto cognisance of the alleged horrific incident of custodial torture and asked for a detailed report within six weeks.
