Former Supreme Court justice B Sudershan Reddy, the INDI Alliance’s nominee for the Vice-Presidential election, filed his nomination papers on Thursday (21 August), reported The New Indian Express.
Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, officially announced Reddy’s candidacy on Tuesday (19 August), following an alliance meeting.
Over 160 MPs signed as his proposers and seconders, underscoring the INDIA bloc’s unity behind his candidacy.
In New Delhi, Reddy submitted four sets of nomination papers to the Rajya Sabha secretary-general, who also serves as the returning officer for the vice-presidential election.
Opposition leaders—including NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, SP’s Ramgopal Yadav, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, TMC’s Satabdi Roy, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Raut, and CPI(M)’s John Brittas—attended and supported his nomination. After scrutinising the documents, the returning officer handed Reddy an acknowledgement slip, formalising the nomination.
Kharge introduced Reddy as the INDIA bloc’s joint candidate and framed the election as more than filling a constitutional post.
“This Vice-Presidential election is not just about filling a constitutional post — it is an ideological battle for the soul of the nation,” Kharge declared.
Reddy’s nomination marks a high-profile entry for the INDI Alliance into the race against the NDA’s candidate, C P Radhakrishnan, ahead of the 9 September election.
