Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday (2 August) inspected EWS (Economically Weaker Section) flats in Sultanpuri, announcing that the government will renovate 50,000 old and dilapidated flats and allot them to slum residents, reported Hindustan Times.

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood joined her during the visit to review the condition of these unoccupied units.

Gupta ordered that no slum dwelling in Delhi be demolished without prior rehabilitation and directed all relevant authorities, including Indian Railways and the DDA, to comply.

“Due to the indifference and malicious policies of previous governments, these flats, ready since 2011, remained deserted for years… Our government is now renovating 50,000 such flats,” said Gupta.

“Electricity, water, toilets, sewer, and parks will be provided here," she added.

In Sultanpuri, a DUSIB project of 1,060 flats, completed in 2016 at a final cost of Rs 63.83 crore, remains mostly vacant.

Each 25sqm unit includes a living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and balcony.

Gupta stated that 50,000 similar flats in outer Delhi require major renovation due to neglect.

She added, “Our government is committed to ensuring dignified housing and a better life for slum dwellers,” noting that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 732 crore for flat repairs.

A comprehensive housing strategy aims to meet the projected demand for 1 million homes.

Sood said, “Despite investing crores of rupees, 50,000 flats remained abandoned… Our government has resolved to redevelop these flats and ensure the availability of all essential facilities.”
