Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated Madhya Pradesh’s longest flyover in Jabalpur on Saturday (23 August), reported The Times Of India.
The 7-km Madan Mahal–Damoh Naka flyover includes the state’s longest cable-stay bridge over Madan Mahal railway station.
The construction work on the project, sanctioned by Gadkari in 2016, began in February 2019.
The project was completed it in six years instead of the estimated three, with the cost rising from Rs 758 crore to Rs 1,053 crore.
The construction stretched 2,190 days, averaging 3.5 metres per day at an expense of Rs 1.20 crore daily.
Officials also extended the flyover length by one kilometre.
Authorities expect the new stretch to ease chronic congestion on the busy route, reducing travel time from 40 minutes to just 10.
A portion from Mahananda to Madan Mahal was earlier inaugurated by former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan in September 2023.
The Congress accused the BJP government of rushing an “incomplete” inauguration ahead of elections.
In June this year, Congress workers even tried to inaugurate the flyover themselves, alleging unnecessary delays.
They also claimed cracks appeared before the opening and accused PWD minister Rakesh Singh of corruption.
After inspection, Additional chief secretary Neeraj Mandloi stated, there was nothing wrong with the flyover’s structure and design.
Legal challenges also arose. Former judges and senior advocates petitioned the MP High Court, arguing the design exceeded Jabalpur’s Master Plan and land was taken without compensation.
The court directed authorities to compensate affected residents as per rules.
