Kochi’s proposed flyover at Palarivattom Bypass Junction, part of the Edappally–Aroor elevated highway, has been realigned to pass above the Kochi Metro’s Phase‑2 viaduct.

According to the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by Bhopal-based Highway Engineering Consultants Ltd, the new structure will rise 32 metres above the existing flyover and the under-construction Pink Line metro viaduct, The New Indian Express reported.

“As per the revised DPR, the flyover is now slated to come up above the metro viaduct of the Pink Line, the construction of which is progressing in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium-Infopark stretch,” a senior NHAI official was quoted as saying.

The revision follows a five-month delay after the initial DPR failed to account for the metro viaduct, prompting the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to demand a fresh alignment.

While the earlier cost was pegged at Rs 3,600 crore, officials say the figure is likely to rise once the NHAI completes its review.

Importantly, the project is being designed within the existing Right of Way, minimising the need for large-scale land acquisition.

The elevated highway is expected to complement Kochi Metro’s Phase‑2 expansion, where the Pink Line runs 11.17 km with 11 stations from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark.

A KMRL official noted that “a special steel span of 60 m will be constructed to facilitate the viaduct above the flyover,” making it one of the highest sections of the metro.

This project, an extension of the 12.75 km Aroor–Thuravoor elevated corridor is 65 per cent complete and targeted for February 2026.

It will ultimately form a 16.294 km continuous link from Oberon Mall near Edappally to Aroor Junction.

Officials emphasise its significance for ensuring seamless traffic flow in one of Kerala’s busiest stretches.
