In a major boost to urban connectivity, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced paperwork for a 20-km elevated corridor linking AIIMS in South Delhi to the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road via Mahipalpur, News18 reported.
This signal-free structure, estimated at Rs 5,000 crore, aims to reduce travel time between AIIMS and Gurugram to mere minutes by alleviating chronic traffic congestion on NH-48 and surrounding routes.
The project, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), involves preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to facilitate seamless integration with existing infrastructure like the Dwarka Expressway.
Officials stated that the corridor will decongest South Delhi, enhance access to IGI Airport, and connect with key expressways, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters.
The flyover will start from AIIMS, pass through Mahipalpur, and extend to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, addressing bottlenecks identified since 2006.
This development revives earlier proposals, incorporating routes via Nelson Mandela Marg for optimal traffic flow.
Stakeholders, including MoRTH and the Delhi government, have transferred relevant roads to NHAI for upgrades, such as adding crash barriers and LED lights on the Mehrauli-Gurugram stretch.
The corridor is expected to halve commute times, with potential links to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway via tunnels or elevated sections.
"This will transform daily travel," said a senior NHAI official. The project aligns with broader efforts to modernise Delhi's infrastructure, drawing from successful models like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
With preliminary assessments underway, the corridor promises to ease jams on Ring Road and NH-48, fostering economic growth between Delhi and Gurugram.
