Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (15 August) addressed the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi on the occasion of 78th Independence Day.

PM Modi's Independence Day speech focused on strengthening the nation through reforms, expanding medical education, addressing concerns in Bangladesh, ensuring swift justice for violence against women, and advocating for a Uniform Civil Code.

Here are the key highlights of PM Modi's Independence Day address:

1. Commitment to Reforms: A Blueprint for Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, emphasised that the BJP-led NDA government's commitment to reforms is aimed at strengthening the country rather than achieving temporary gains.

"Earlier, people wanted change but their aspirations were not paid heed to. We have brought big reforms on the ground," PM Modi stated.

He assured the citizens that the government's path to reforms is not driven by external pressures but is focused on national growth.

"This reform, this growth, this change is not just a matter of discussion for debate clubs...we have just one resolve - Nation First," he added. Modi also highlighted the strength of Indian banks under his administration, noting their global standing.

2. Expansion of Medical Education: 75,000 New Seats Announced

PM Narendra Modi announced the creation of 75,000 new seats in medical colleges over the next five years, addressing the nation's need for a stronger domestic education system.

“I do not want to see our students being forced to travel overseas for studies,” he remarked, emphasizing the government's vision of developing an education system that attracts global students to India.

"In the next five years, 75,000 new seats will be created in medical colleges in India," PM Modi declared, underscoring the government's commitment to a 'Swasth Bharat' by 2047.

3. Concern for Safety of Hindus in Bangladesh,

Addressing the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, PM Modi expressed confidence that the situation will return to normalcy soon, acknowledging the concerns of Indian citizens over the safety of Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh.

"As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh," he said, adding that India remains committed to peace and the welfare of neighbouring countries.

"India always wants our neighbouring countries to walk the path of prosperity and peace," PM Modi stated, reiterating India's support for Bangladesh's development journey.

4. Addressing Violence Against Women: Need for Swift Justice

In light of the recent outrage over the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor in Kolkata, PM Modi stressed the importance of instilling a fear of punishment in those with 'monstrous tendencies.'

"I can feel this outrage," PM Modi said, emphasising the need for speedy investigations and strict punishments for crimes against women to restore societal confidence.

He urged for a broader discussion on the punishment of such crimes to deter future offenders, stating, "It is the need of the hour, that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging."

5. Call for Uniform Civil Code

PM Narendra Modi advocated for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, criticizing the current civil code as "communal" and advocating for a secular alternative.

"The Supreme Court has held discussions regarding Uniform Civil Code again and again, it has given orders several times," PM Modi said, highlighting the need for a secular civil code to eliminate religious discrimination.

"It is the need of the hour that there be a Secular Civil Code in the country...only then would we be free of the discrimination on the basis of religion," he added, marking a strong push for legal reforms in India.
